One of our favorite things about our island is that there is so much shore that the beaches are never crowded! Rent some chairs and umbrellas to bring with you, then set up here for the day.

Go For a Swim 
During the warm months on the Forgotten Coast, ocean water is a welcomed relief from the hot sun. You’ll love taking a dip in the clear water when you visit St. George Island State Park! If you bring the kids, they’ll most likely spend the entire day splashing around. You won’t even have to entertain them like usual!

Cast a Line
Fishing is one of the most relaxing pastimes, and there is plenty of opportunity for it on St. George Island. If you want to cast your line in St. George Island State Park, you’ll have the opportunity to catch flounder, redfish, sea trout, pompano, whiting, and sometimes even Spanish mackerel! St. George Island Jet Ski Rentals at the Jet Ski Hut
You can find amazing St. George Island jet ski rentals at the Jet Ski Hut, located adjacent to the Blue Parrot. Jet ski rentals are available during the warmer months, from early March through early October. The Jet Ski Hut is open daily from 9 am to 6 pm when weather permits and you can rent their wave runners for as little as 30 minutes or as long as 8 hours! Rates are as follows:

About the Apalachicola River Wildlife and Environmental Area
The Apalachicola River Wildlife and Environmental area (Apalachicola River WEA) spans across 63,257 acres of pineland, floodplain swamp, savanna and estuary habitats. It is the largest expanse of floodplain forest in Florida, stretching from the lower areas of the Apalachicola River all the way north from Apalachicola Bay to Liberty County. The natural flora and fauna support an extensive population of rare and common wildlife, including more than 280 species of native birds! Top 5 Things to Do at the Apalachicola River WEA

1. Hunting
Whether your game of choice is squirrel, dove, deer, turkey, or wild hog, you’ll find plenty of great hunting opportunities at the Apalachicola River WEA. Hunting season typically peaks between mid-November and mid-January. Make sure to obtain the appropriate licenses and check out Florida’s current hunting regulations and hunt calendar before you visit.

2. Hiking and Biking
With miles of picturesque trails to explore, this nature preserve is every outdoor enthusiast’s dream! We recommend starting with the interpretive trail at the Sand Beach Recreation Area. Hike beneath the cabbage palms, enjoy breathtaking views from the observation tower, or share lunch at one of the shaded picnic tables. The Apalachicola River WEA also has nearly 100 unpaved miles for hiking, biking, or horseback riding.

Little St. George Island 

Little St. George Island was once a part of St. George Island but was separated during the Bob Sike’s Cut. A channel was created between the two parts so Apalachicola fishing fleets and other vessels could more easily access the gulf from Apalachicola Bay. Because of this, Little St. George has been cut off from civilization. Here, you will find the Cape St. George Island State Reserve! More than nine miles of untouched beaches, incredible hiking trails, and amazing wildlife are waiting to be explored.

Getting There
You won’t have to worry about any traffic getting to Cape St. George Island State Reserve; it is only accessible by boat! Keep in mind that Apalachicola Bay and the Gulf of Mexico can pose a challenge for small boats, kayaks, and canoes. If you choose a small craft, make sure that you are aware of tides, wind, and weather. Otherwise, we recommend renting a boat to bring over and park at the community Marshall Dock.

If you don’t trust yourself to get to Little St. George Island safely, Journey’s of St. George Island offers guided boat tours that include a stop at the island. The 3-Hour Powerboat Tour will take you to the island to bring you to the original site of the St. George Lighthouse. Then, you’ll have some time for walking the beach before hopping back on the boat! Another option is a sailing charter. Just let them know you want to stop at the island!

What You’ll Find
Untouched Landscapes
When you first step foot on the Cape St. George Island State Reserve, it will be very apparent that the island is uninhabited. The pristine white sands merge into a forest to create an island paradise. Not much of Florida’s original natural landscape is left, but on Little St. George, you can still experience a small piece. The gorgeous plant life that is spread throughout the island is one of its biggest allures. The landscape is made up of dunes, pine flatwoods, extensive flatlands, and a small willow swamp.

Flourishing Wildlife 
Because the Environmentally Endangered Lands Program protects the island, the wildlife and natural landscape has been able to flourish. No motorized vehicles are allowed and rangers patrol the island from time to time to protect it. There are few mammals found here due to its separation from the mainland, but a family of raccoons have made it their home. However, a wide array of birds make their way to the island during migration in the spring and fall.

Go on a Hike 
Hiking is the number one activity to enjoy on the St. George Island State Reserve! Trails consist of sand, shrubbery, and wildflowers.
